Ultra filtration is a low pressure membrane process use to seperate high molecular weight compounds from a feed stream. It is useful for the seperation of delicate materials since it is a non denaturing method of seperation. It has larger pores then the reverse osmosis. It's seperation requires fewer membrane elements and lower pressure operation, and is therefore the least costly of the three to operate. The filtrated water only contains dissolved salts and organic molecules. It does not clog the membrane used during reverse osmosis, which is the next step in the newater production process. Ultra filtration filters out suspended solids, colloidal particles, disease- causing bacterial and other viruses.
